Meet the Artist

Ida-Painting

A lifelong exploration of light, nature and the emotions hidden within a moment.

From early explorations of the natural world to more than four decades of painting, Ida Lombard has developed a distinctive Abstract Realism that looks beyond what we see to what we feel. Light, movement, stillness, vulnerability and hope continually find their way into her work.

Today, she creates original paintings in oils, acrylics and mixed media from her Johannesburg studio, inviting the viewer to pause, explore and discover their own connection with the work.

Art with a story

Original oil painting of a lone African elephant crossing a river at sunset with dramatic storm clouds by Ida Lombard.
The Last Crossing portrays a solitary elephant bull moving quietly through the river at sunset, symbolising resilience, dignity and hope through life's final seasons.

Every artwork has a story. But sometimes the story behind a painting becomes a little too familiar.

The Last Crossing portrays an ageing elephant bull moving through dark water. His head dips beneath the weight of the journey, then rises again.

Perhaps that is why this painting speaks to something deeper in us. Because everyone has a last crossing.

It might be retirement. Illness. Losing someone you love. Children leaving home. A marriage ending. A career coming to an end. A business closing. Or simply reaching a point where the life you knew is changing and you have to find your way into what comes next.

There are times when the water feels deep and the road ahead uncertain.

But you lift your head.

You take another step.

You keep going.

That is the story behind The Last Crossing.

And perhaps, when you live with it, its story becomes part of yours.

Because the artwork we choose for our homes can become more than something beautiful to look at. It can remind us of where we have been, what we have overcome and where we are still going. That personal connection is one of the reasons art can become so meaningful to collectors.

Every painting has a story.
The beautiful part is discovering where yours meets it.
